Neurological sequelae in pediatric cerebral malaria: the Indian perspective.

چکیده
Sir, I read an interesting case report entitled, “Expressive aphasia: An isolated and reversible copmlication of cerebral malaria in a child” published in June 2012 issue of our esteemed journal (J Vector Borne Dis 49(2); p. 117– 8) by Maini and colleagues. It is worth appreciation as authors have pointed out that “there is paucity of literature on post-cerebral malaria expressive aphasia in children from Indian subcontinent and neurological deficits are known to be higher in children than adults, in cerebral malaria. There is a need to create Indian epidemiological database of aphasia and other neurological deficits due to cerebral malaria, especially in children”. With acknowledging the efforts made by the authors I would like to share my views:

Pattern and predictors of neurological morbidities among childhood cerebral malaria survivors in central Sudan.
BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES Cerebral malaria is considered a leading cause of neuro-disability in sub-Saharan Africa among children and about 25% of survivors have long-term neurological and cognitive deficits or epilepsy. Their development was reported to be associated with protracted seizures, deep and prolonged coma. The study was aimed to determine the discharge pattern and to identify potentia...
متن کاملNeurological sequelae in survivors of cerebral malaria
INTRODUCTION Cerebral malaria is a common cause of neurological sequelae and death in childhood. Information on persistent neurological sequelae post hospital discharge and their predisposing factors are scarce. METHODS This is a prospective study describing persisting neurological impairments post discharge among children treated for cerebral malaria. In addition the study was designed to in...

The causes of death and neurological sequelae in African children with cerebral malaria are obscure. Intracranial pressure (ICP) was monitored and cerebral perfusion pressure (CPP) calculated in 23 Kenyan children with cerebral malaria. Four children had severe intracranial hypertension (ICP > 40 mm Hg, CPP < 40 mm Hg): two died, one with an ICP of 158 mm Hg and signs of transtentorial herniati...
متن کاملSeizures and status epilepticus in childhood cerebral malaria.
Prolonged, multiple seizures complicate a high proportion of cases of childhood cerebral malaria, and several studies have shown an association between these and neurological sequelae. We prospectively studied 65 patients (38 female) admitted to Kilifi Hospital in 1994. Electroencephalographic recordings (EEGs) were made at 12-hourly intervals, with continuous recordings made on a cerebral func...
متن کاملHigh levels of erythropoietin are associated with protection against neurological sequelae in African children with cerebral malaria.
Cerebral malaria (CM) in children is associated with a high mortality and long-term neurocognitive sequelae. Both erythropoietin (Epo) and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) have been shown to be neuroprotective. We hypothesized that high plasma and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) levels of these cytokines would prevent neurological sequelae in children with CM. We measured Epo, VEGF, and tumo...
